Rest In Peace: Nikki Giovanni
We send love to the family and loved ones of Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr., as news broke that the renowned poet, activist, and provocateur, passed away in Blacksburg, Virginia, at the age of 81.
Giovanni leaves behind an indelible legacy as one of the most celebrated voices of the Black Arts Movement. With a career spanning over five decades, she penned more than two dozen bestselling poetry collections and children's books, including Black Judgment (1968) and Those Who Ride the Night Winds (1983). Her work gave voice to the struggles and triumphs of Black America, touching on civil rights, Black power, hip-hop, and more.
Her accolades speak to her profound impact: Langston Hughes Medal recipient, multiple NAACP Image Award honoree, Emmy Award winner, and Grammy Award nominee. Yet her greatest contribution was her ability to connect with people across generations. As her wife, Virginia "Ginney" Fowler, once said, Giovanni was “the definitive ‘poet of the people.’”
Giovanni is survived by Fowler, a fellow writer and professor, and her son, Thomas Giovanni. In a statement on behalf of the family, relative Allison Ragan reflected, “We will forever feel blessed to have shared a legacy and love with our dear cousin.”
Through her words and her unwavering spirit, Nikki Giovanni challenged the world to see, to feel, and to act. She remains a beacon of truth, creativity, and resilience, whose voice will echo far beyond her lifetime.
We truly lost a literary giant.
Rest in power, Nikki Giovanni.
